Broken Car

I am like the unrepaired car,
You know the one that manages to get around town?
It looks clean on the outside, but the inside is in bad shape.
You can’t truly understand what it’s like until you’re inside it.

I am like the unrepaired car.
Every time I encounter a pothole, I am afraid—
Afraid that I might have to stop in the middle of the road,
And everyone will stare, feel pity, or curse. It’s all shameful.

I am like the unrepaired car.
Let’s not even talk about the time it takes me to brake.
The noise I make, the way I jerk, it’s embarrassing,
Especially when I break down. It’s terrible!

I am like the unrepaired car.
Yes, I might complain about the cost of fixing me,
Or I might not even think I need fixing at all,
Deceiving myself with the thought, “it happens to the best of us.”

I am like the unrepaired car.
When I decide to get myself fixed, I don’t trust anyone.
I hear they want to remove or change something,
And I run away; fear of change keeps me unrepaired.

I am like the unrepaired car,
That knows the price was already paid in full.
I know I can get fixed, but for strange reasons,
I remain the unrepaired car.
